Personal care
Hands-on help with the private parts of the day, given by certified aides who protect dignity as carefully as they protect skin and bones.
Personal care is for the moments when a person needs another pair of hands: getting into the shower safely, buttoning a shirt, standing up from a low chair, reaching the toilet in time. These are the tasks families find hardest to help with, and the ones a trained aide makes easy and unembarrassing.
What a personal care visit includes
- Bathing, showering and bed baths
- Dressing and undressing
- Grooming, shaving, hair and oral care
- Toileting and incontinence care
- Safe transfers: bed, chair, wheelchair, car
- Walking support and fall prevention
- Skin checks and repositioning
- Help with eating and hydration
- Medication reminders
- Range-of-motion exercises as prescribed
How we keep it dignified
Our aides are trained to narrate what they are doing, to keep a person covered, to ask before touching, and to let the person do whatever they can for themselves. The goal is not to take over. It is to make sure the things that still work keep working.
Men and women can request a caregiver of the same sex for personal care. We honor that wherever we possibly can.
Who provides it
In New Jersey, hands-on personal care must be delivered by a Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) working under the supervision of a registered nurse. Every Arie caregiver who provides personal care holds a current CHHA certification from the New Jersey Board of Nursing, and our nurse visits regularly to supervise and update the care plan.
Typical schedules
Most families start with morning visits of four hours, three to five days a week, timed around bathing and breakfast. Evening visits help with the bedtime routine. If needs grow, the same caregiver can extend hours or we add an overnight shift.
