Respite care

You have been doing this alone. You do not have to keep doing it alone to prove anything.

Family caregivers in New Jersey provide most of the care that older adults receive, and most of them never take a day off. Respite care is a trained caregiver stepping into your routine for an afternoon, a weekend or a holiday, so you can rest, work, travel or simply be a daughter again instead of a nurse.

Ways to use respite

  • A standing weekly break. The same caregiver every Tuesday afternoon, so you can count on it and plan around it.
  • A weekend or a trip. Overnight or live-in cover for a wedding, a vacation, or a hospital stay of your own.
  • Short notice. When you are sick or something comes up, call us. We keep caregivers available for urgent respite.
  • Recovery respite. Extra help in the weeks after a hospital discharge while the family finds its feet.

We follow your routine, not ours

Before the first respite visit, we sit with you and write down how you do things: what she eats, how he likes his coffee, which medications at which hour, what calms a bad afternoon. Our caregiver follows that, so the person receiving care notices as little change as possible.

Paying for respite

Respite can be paid privately by the hour with no contract. NJ FamilyCare’s MLTSS program and some long-term care insurance policies also cover respite hours, and the Statewide Respite Care Program through the Essex County Division of Senior Services offers help for families who do not qualify for Medicaid. We can walk you through all of it.
